ABOUT

Arden-Arcade has a very cool history steming back to 1843. Originally part of a Mexican land grant deeded to John Sutter, the Racho Del Paso grant was negotiated from the Mexican governor on August 10, 1843. During the years 1862-1905, James Ben Ali Haggin took over the Rancho, where he became known for breeding race horses. One of the horses bred on the Rancho, Ben Ali, won the 12th Kentucky Derby in world record time. To ship his horses, Haggin built a railroad track from his ranch, that went northeast toward the current day Union Pacific railroad tracks located northeast of our current day Capitol City Freeway along Arcade Blvd. On this site Haggin's staff built 24 barns with 64 stalls each plus some out buildings. It was here that he would ship his horses mostly to Kentucky, some eventually shipping around the world.

The name “Arden” came from the Hebrew word for garden, and “Arcade” referenced the arcade of native oak trees in the area. Arden-Arcade and neighboring Carmichael were advertised to visitors and residents as an excellent area for growing citrus, but olives, nuts and stone fruit were also farmed here. At one time, Arden Arcade was the hop growing region of the world.

Today, Arden Arcade is a desired neighborhood full of gorgeous older homes and great schools, including public and private schools.

Things to do

Shopping centers fill this area including the first shopping center built west of the Mississippi River - Town & Country Village! Opened in 1949, The Village was a high end boutique center with an old west decor. In its heyday, it held a Joseph Magnin's, smaller local boutique shops, and elegant dining. It is located at Fulton and Marconi Avenue, and today has Trader Joe's and Sprouts as main anchors.

Other shopping destinations also fill the area - The Pavilions Shopping Center, anchored by a Williams-Sonoma and a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, is a destination shopping center in Arden Arcade. Loehmann's Plaza and Country Club Plaza also draw people from all over Sacramento. Country Club Plaza is an indoor shopping mall located in Arden-Arcade. It is anchored by Winco grocery store and a new luxury movie theatre.
