The group of French gold miners were headed to Coloma when they made the discovery in Auburn Ravine area. Two years later, in 1850, the towns population had grown to 1,500 people and Auburn was chosen to be the seat of Placer County.

Today, Auburn is home to many young professionals and families. Due to its beautiful landscape, Auburn has been the place where Hollywood choses to shoot a few blockbusters including The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, xXx, The Ugly Truth, and Phenomenon.
