ABOUT

Davis is the most populated city in Yolo County. It borders West Sacramento and Woodland. Population numbers do not include students at University of California, Davis, which add an additional almost 40,000 to the city’s population. From its founding, Davis has been known as a farming community and has huge contributions in the state’s agricultural, veterinary care, and animal husbandry policies. UC Davis originally was University of California’s University Farm before being upgraded to its own university in 1959.

Today, Davis is still predominantly a college town with a huge bicycling culture. The United States Bicycling Hall of Fame has called Davis home since 2010. Biking became popular in the 1960s in Davis by university and elementary-aged students and has since become the most popular mode of transportation. The Cal Aggie Cycling Team has won for national road cycling competitions!

THINGS TO DO

Davis Farmers’ Market is held every Saturday morning in downtown Davis. Local farmers sell a range of fruits and vegetables, baked goods, dairy and meat products (often from certified organic farms), crafts, and plants and flowers. During the Spring, Summer, and Fall months, the market is also held Wednesday evenings and features musical events and food from local restaurants. In 2009 and 2010, the Davis Farmers Market won awards for being one of America's Favorite Farmers Markets.

UC Davis Arboretum is a popular botanical garden and arboretum featuring plants from all over the world. The university garden is home is many notable oak trees and a small redwood grove. A beautiful running waterway spans the entire length of the arboretum and occasionally you can find herons and kingfishers, plus the always-presents ducks.

Mondavi Center is also located on UC Davis’ campus and is one of the biggest non-seasonal/non-agricultural attractions in the city. The theatre hosts many world-class touring acts, including star performers such Yo-Yo Ma and the San Francisco Symphony, and draws a large audience from Sacramento.
