Fair Oaks is located between downtown Sacramento and Folsom, and borders Rancho Cordova, Orangevale, Carmichael, and Citrus Heights. It is easily accessible from Highway 50 and Interstate 80. There are also many bike trails in the area, and American River Bike Trail runs through Fair Oaks.

The town center of Fair Oaks, Old Fair Oaks Village, is about a half-mile away from the American River Parkway. The Veterans Memorial Amphitheater is located in this part of town and hosts the Fair Oaks Theater Festival, the Fair Oaks Fiesta and Car Show, and the annual Fair Oaks Chicken Festival each September. The town center also houses the Fair Oaks History Center, many bars and restaurants, and museums.
